I love it! She has been wanting something different and I'm glad she decided to go short. What do you think?
Ashton started first grade this week. I can't believe I have a first grader. Does that make me old or just experienced? I'll go with experienced. She had such a great year last year that I hope her teacher this year shows as much love and interest in her as Mr. Barnhill did. She is reading like a champ, can write most anything she wants to and can count to 100 by 10s.
How long until she starts bringing home algebra homework? I need to do some studying.

Cole is really enjoying food these days. Bananas, peaches, sweet potatoes, squash... you name it, he'll eat it! Tonight I actually gave him bits of a real peach. He just gums it up like an old man. Makes us laugh. Thought you would like to see how dirty he can get. Even when he's not eating, he just drools all over the place. No teeth yet either... go figure.

Lynell turns 31 next week so Ashton, Cole and I went to the mall to do some birthday shopping tonight. We always pass Arden B. and bebe on the way in, but tonight, a question popped in my head... who shops at these places and to what kind of event is it OK to wear these clothes? The mannequins in the windows are dressed in leather vests, short jumpsuits and other ypes of immodest Parisian runway styles. Just seems odd to see at the mall in Durham. And not very practical. Maybe Lynell would like something like that for Music Makers?
Then we went upstairs past Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Hot Topic... skin everywhere. Then Ashton told me that soon, she'd be able to shop at the girl's stores and not the baby stores. Oh joy. So long Gap Kids and Gymboree, hello Limited Too and abercrombie kids. How long before she wants to have her own cell phone and makes me walk 20 feet behind her in the mall?
Tonight, she held my hand and offered to hold one of the bags. We jumped over the white floor tiles and shared a lemonade. I realllly don't want her to grow up so fast!
We use a form of bribery a lot with Ashton and Ethan. They love collecting pennies for doing good things around the house -- cleaning up their toys without being asked, doing something nice for someone else, eating all their meals, etc.
The other night, Ethan was being very slow with his dinner. We were done and Ashton had just finished, so we started having a post-dinner cupcake. Ethan asked "Can I be done?", but there were still a lot of chicken nuggets on his plate, so we said "no, finish your dinner first". Undaunted, he came back with this retort...
"Pleeeeeease? I'll give you some money if I can be done!"
Maybe we should find another way to motivate the kids.

Ethan decided he wanted to make eggs the other night. He doesn't actually like to eat them, just make them. If I can just get him to like to vacuum, cut the grass and take out the trash, my work here will be done.

So every year, we go down to North Myrtle Beach, SC to enjoy the surf and sand. This year, we'll probably only get to go once, but what a trip it was! Here are a few pictures of our trip, with some commentary.
Not sure where Ethan was during this picture. Probably looking at the "pirate ship"...
Ashton really wanted to rent one of these crazy beach bicycles, so we relented and let her have one. It took a few minutes, but after that, she was off and racing. And she didn't even run into anyone...
We took the kids to play miniature golf (affectionately known as "putt-putt" around here). After Ethan got the ball close on one hole, he tossed his club to the side, laid down on the carpet and started blowing his ball in the hole. No idea where he got that idea, but we all had a good chuckle. He carded his first career hole in one on #2. Look out Tiger.
When Sharks Attack! I was sitting under the umbrella holding Cole when I looked out and saw a group of people forming, mothers yanking their kids out of the water and lots of pointing fingers. Being the curious person that I am, we headed down to check out what was going on. Turns out it was a 4-foot long hammerhead shark swimming around in the surf! Grey dorsal fin and lots of people with questionable judgment getting way too close, if you ask me. I didn't get a picture of the shark, but I thought the gaggle of onlookers was pretty cool. There were about twice as many at first, but people got bored and went back in the water. We headed to the pool. My mama didn't raise no fool...
